Students will begin this assignment by watching the U.S. Presidents Series Video: Ronald Reagan (on YouTube). The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of Reagan's presidency. The personality and leadership style of Ronald Reagan is first explained by the video. The video then goes on to provide detailed information about many events of Reagan's presidency, including: his attempted assassination, the Iran-Contra Affair, Reaganomics, and his relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev. The video takes an in depth look at the Cold War and the part which Reagan played in helping bring it to a close. The branding of the "Evil Empire", the "Star Wars" missile defense system, and the various summits with Gorbachev are all discussed. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website and read a biographical article about Ronald Reagan. His youth and college years are first examined as is his extensive Hollywood career. The article then goes on to cover his time in politics prior to the presidency, primarily as the governor of California. The article give detailed results of Reagan's victories in 1980 and 1984. Also, the article further discusses the role Reagan played in the Cold War and offers support and skepticism of his economic planning.
