“Investigating Primary Documents: Political Cartoon Edition” featuring Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Supreme Court is intended to help students analyze political cartoons in a historical context. The assignments can be used as a supplement in lessons surrounding FDR, the 1930s, the Supreme Court, the New Deal, the Great Depression, or Checks and Balances. Students will examine “The Ingenious Quarterback!” by CK Berryman, which appeared in 1937.
Included are two student activities: (1) “First Glance” is intended for students to investigate the cartoon through self discovery and questioning. Students formulate their own questions and use pre-written questions to guide their examination. (2) “Contextual Examination” includes a brief summary of the historical context and invites students to analyze the cartoon in light of the historical circumstances of the time period. Also included are an overview and answer guide.
“Investigating Primary Documents: Political Cartoon Edition” can be used as an in-class assignment, homework assignment, or as an extension activity. This assignment can be used in a variety of classes including US History, Government and Politics, and Civics.
“First Glance” and “Contextual Investigation” can be used in conjunction with each other or as separate assignments.
