This document outlines project expectations (including a rubric) for students in determining the root causes of the Civil War. This assignment asks students (solo, in pairs or trios), to determine what their opinion of the root causes of the Civil War and present them, in a persuasive fashion to their classmates via PowerPoint and in class presentation.
I have used this assignment in conjunction with DBQ 8 (Document Based Assessment for U.S. History - Middle School) adding in information on the Dred Scott Supreme Court Case.
This assignment forces students to state an opinion and back it up with facts, documents and information. I will give students 5 in class days to complete this project (3 in classroom days and 2 computer lab/media lab days) and will spend 2-3 class days presenting.
I have included a document for students to take notes during others' presentations as a way to increase engagement during presentations, and as a way for students to select a "most persuasive" group - sort of contest. Feel free to omit this part if you are not seeking feedback, student to student.
