Root Word Trading Cards! Make studying root words FUN in whole groups, partners, individually, or centers with meaningful, research based strategies! This is a set of 24 root word flashcards that I designed to look like trading cards. By helping your students memorize the meanings of these Greek and Latin Roots they’ll be able to figure out the meanings of many words they come across in their reading. This is one of the best vocabulary building exercises I’ve found. This product is also available with two other similar ELA products in the Prefix, Suffix, and Root Word Cards Pack
This Root Word Trading Card Set includes:
• 24 root word flashcards
• 8 blank flashcard templates for students to add words to as they come across them in their reading and writing
• Bookmarks to print out for your students with a list of all of the root words included in this set. This way they can have them close by and pay attention to them in their reading.
• A template for a labeled box that students can cut out, write their name on and color to store their prefix cards in.
I tried to make these cards more engaging for students by designing them to look like trading cards. To make these cards I print them out back to back on the copy machine using card stock so they look and feel like real trading cards. Printing them out on regular paper works also.
The front of each card has the root word as well as a space for students to sketch a picture or symbol to help them remember it making the flashcards interactive. Allowing students to draw pictures or symbols to help them remember the root is called non-linguistic representation. I’ve seen this research-based strategy for increasing student achievement work again and again in my own classroom.
The back of each card has the definition of the root word as well as an example or two of words with the root in them. There is space to either write the definition of each example word or add more examples of words that use the root depending on the teacher’s preference. I also included 8 blank cards to print out for students so they can make more cards as they find more roots they want to study.
The use of Greek and Latin Roots is mentioned in the Common Core State Standards under language for vocabulary acquisition at almost every grade level. Just one example of this is the fourth grade language standard L.4.4 which says, “Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., telegraph, photograph, autograph).”
