This bundle includes materials for explicitly teaching common Greek and Latin in roots in real context. The set includes 55 Greek and Latin roots cards with meanings. I recommend pasting these onto cards, photocopying them for students, and putting them on rings to practice daily. Students can use resources to list words that include these roots. This set also includes a roots packet, which introduces the root to students in the context of a sentence and real word. Students can attempt to infer the root and meaning of the new word. It is recommended that students be taught affixes and parts of speech prior to this unit so they can make stronger vocabulary inferences. It is also recommended teaching no more than 5 roots at a time. Use the notes as a guide and students can practice with sentence frames in this packet. Words should be used regularly and frequently. This bundle includes two review games. Students "guess" the words given a list of clues. Put this sheet under a document camera and have kids infer the words. You can put them in small groups or teams. They love this and it challenges them to think deeply about word meaning. Also included in this bundle is a end-of-unit project with three project "rough draft" sheets and an overview sheet. Final projects can be displayed in many forms, but the rough drafts are helpful for student planning. This unit was the most enjoyable for students and helped their vocabulary grow greatly.
