How do you fit in all the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes that your students need to know? Use this full-year set of bellringers (warm-ups) to introduce, practice, and review the root words of our English language. Increase your students' vocabulary and reading skills by focusing on one root word, prefix, or suffix each day - with one word study slide built in each week for practice deciphering real vocabulary words.
You'll get 180 days of bellringer PowerPoint slides (one root, prefix, or suffix each day), 36 weekly worksheets containing four roots/affixes and one practice word, and an answer key with the meaning of each root or affix as well as two additional words containing it to help students make more etymology connections.
My students LOVE seeing what the root word of the day is, and they get super excited to raise their hands and suggest other words with the root in them. I highly recommend using having a Google window open during this bellringer activity, since students will undoubtedly call out words not on the list. You can easily search "etymology of __" to discover whether the word in question really relates to the root. They love it when I look up their words, and we've learned some fascinating things about word origins.
By the end of the year, your students will have been introduced to and interacted with over 140 Greek and Latin (and Old English, too!) roots and affixes, and their word analysis skills will grow in preparation for any end-of-year testing. More importantly, they will learn to figure out unfamiliar words in their reading.
Roots and affixes are probably my favorite topic to teach in English/language arts, and I hope your students get as much out of these activities as mine have!
