This ready to use resource is easy to adapt to meet the needs of your students. One of the best parts is that in just six weeks, your students will work with 108 roots and affixes! We have been amazed in our own classrooms at how this study helps students decode unfamiliar words and helps to improve end-of-year test scores!
This is a spiraling affixes/roots unit designed to be completed in six weeks. The unique spiraling approach means that the word parts learned in week one will still be reviewed and tested in week six. Each week, students are introduced to eighteen grade-appropriate affixes and roots. The word cards and practice pages can be used to meet your classroom needs.
Each unit contains the following:
Roots/Affix Unit list –includes 18 roots/affixes in a chart that includes the meaning, a picture, a word, and a space for students to write more words using the root or affix - We have our students "fill in" their own lists using online dictionaries. Our students find the pictures very helpful in learning the roots and affixes. You may wish to have your students glue these lists into a notebook to refer back to as they learn these roots and affixes.
Word wall cards, flashcards, and matching cards – which can be used in a variety of ways in your classroom - We use these in our centers.
Foldable to use in interactive notebook or for students to use as a study guide
Two practice pages that can be used for classwork or homework
A unit test
The tests and the practice pages “spiral”. This means that an affix learned in unit 1 may be on the practice and test for unit 4. This keeps all of the affixes and roots in the forefront of your students’ minds!
With the time crunch all ELA teachers are under to “fit it all in”, this unit has everything you need to teach students critical lists of roots quickly and effectively!
