This article is about assertive communication. We often talk about Rosa Parks during Black History Month, however, we can learn from her example of “quiet courage, dignity and determination” at any time.

Rosa Parks is famous for her role in the US civil rights movement. We talk about her strength of character to refuse to give up her seat because she was Black. In this article, we focus on the moment on the bus when she told the bus driver that she wasn’t going to give up her seat.

The take-away message is that assertive communication requires courageously addressing conflict in a respectful way that does not cross your personal boundaries. It’s hard because you might be all alone at the time, and even if you are assertive, it doesn’t always work out for you.
