This resource helps students who are learning how to annotate.
After reading "The Youngest Doll," students are asked to analyze given passages for literary devices (conflict, theme, setting, characterization, magical realism imagery, and symbolism). Students choose one device per passage and explain their reasoning. Students are also given space to record a passage from the text which they believe should be included on the handout and why they think this way.
Offers a non-threatening way to apply literary devices and scan a story for devices which enhance the writer's craft.
