What are the Jewish High Holy Days? What is Rosh Hashanah? What is Yom Kippur? These reading passages with accompanying comprehension questions teach your students about 2 of the most important Jewish holidays. The texts are scaffolded to provide support to students and come in both print and digital formats.

How Rosh Hashanah is celebrated forms the first part of the printable resource. Students learn about the meaning of the holiday, how to greet people during the holiday and Rosh Hashanah traditions, including foods eaten on Rosh Hashanah.

There is a printable reading passage followed by comprehension questions. The reading passage and questions come in 3 versions:

* With text in a large font size and 1 paragraph per page followed by 1 question on each page, and images to illustrate each paragraph.

* With text in a smaller font size and several paragraphs per page followed by all the questions on 1 page, and images that illustrate the text and questions.

* With text in a smaller font size and several paragraphs per page followed by all the questions on 1 page, and images that illustrate just the text.

Cover pages and answer keys are provided for all 3 versions to help you organize the materials. All the color texts are grouped together and then all the black-and-white texts come after that.

How Yom Kippur is celebrated forms the second part of the printable resource. Students learn about the meaning of the holiday, how to greet people during the holiday and Yom Kippur traditions, including fasting for Yom Kippur. There is a printable reading passage followed by comprehension questions. The reading passage and questions come in 3 versions:

* With text in a large font size and 1 paragraph per page followed by 1 question on each page, and images to illustrate each paragraph.

* With text in a smaller font size and several paragraphs per page followed by all the questions on 1 page, and images that illustrate the text and questions.

* With text in a smaller font size and several paragraphs per page followed by all the questions on 1 page, and images that illustrate just the text.

In the Google Drive-compatible resource, students first read about Rosh Hashanah and answer questions, then read about Yom Kippur and answer questions. The reading passages in the digital materials are organized the same way as the printable materials. In addition, the first version of the digital version includes an audio component — students can click an audio icon and hear the reading passage and comprehension questions read out loud. Answer keys are included in the digital materials for your convenience.

A list of the ELA Common Core standards these Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur reading passages help address is included for your reference. Directions for accessing the Google Drive materials are also provided.

The dates of the Jewish High Holy Days in 2022 are: Rosh Hashanah starts the evening of September 25th and Yom Kippur starts the evening of October 4th. Happy New Year!
