Our students come to school with many different personalities. Teaching them social skills is very important to help them get along and to have a pleasant classroom environment. One way is to assist your students is through literature. Rosie Sprout's Time to Shine is a great book to explore with your class and examine the various points of view and behaviors of the characters.
Violet does everything the best- running, coloring, singing. Everyone agrees that she's the best. Everyone, that is, except Rosie. Rosie's tired of hearing that Violet is the best.
When growing plants in class, Rosie's and Violet's plants are the first to sprout. Rosie wants a chance to be the best so she brushes some soil over Violet's. At first Rosie feels great about what she did but then she starts to feel guilty.
Violet is out sick with the chicken pox and Rosie decides she will take care of Violet's plant to make up for what she did.
In the end, Rosie's teacher praises her for being a great gardener and Violet comes back to see her plant has grown.
