Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
This phonics box is for the two schwa “rules”:
1) “a” says /Ə/ in an unstressed open syllable (often the first or last syllable)
2) “I” says /Ə/ in an unstressed open syllable (often the middle syllable)
Schwa does occur in other situations but these two are the focus for this file.
Word Sort: Print, laminate, and cut out the header cards and the word cards. Students take turns sorting them by the rule used in the word.
“Rotten Bananas” – Print, laminate and cut out the banana cards and the spoiler cards. Students take turns drawing a card, stating the schwa rule and reading the word. They collect the cards. If they receive a “rotten banana” card, they lose that number of bananas. At the end of the game, plays count their “good” bananas. The student with the most “good” bananas is the winner!
