This lesson teaches the steps for rounding numbers to the nearest ten, nearest hundred and also rounding larger numbers. The lesson introduces the students to resources that support them in rounding including a rounding roller coaster (a modified number line) as well as a copy of the rounding rule.
In this lesson the skill of rounding to ten is taught using a series steps and then the students are given practice problems. Next the students are taught how to round to the hundreds place and then they are given practice problems. Finally, the students are taught how to generalize what they learned while rounding to the nearest ten and rounding to the nearest hundred in order to round larger numbers.
For those students who are really struggling 18 additional problems are added to the end of the lesson that include using a number line to round to the nearest 10.
This lesson also includes two differentiated assessments. Assessment 1 is for students who were focusing on rounding to the tens, hundreds, and thousands. Assessment 2 is for the students who were focusing on rounding larger numbers. This lesson also includes an enlarged version of the rounding roller coaster and the rounding rule that can printed out as resources for the students.
This lesson focuses on the common core standards of 3.NBT.A1 and 4.NBT.A3 but it can be used for any students who are still struggling with rounding.
