The rounding triangle is the easiest way that I've found to teach rounding without confusing students with little rhymes and tricks. They get back to the basics with place value skills to round by simply using critical thinking skills to determine which number a give number is closest to.
There are 30 practice pages with answer keys. The practice pages are divided into 6 sets, so five practice pages per set. Sets A-E also include an example page to work through with students.
Set A—Rounding to the Nearest Ten, 2 digit
Set B—Rounding to the Nearest Ten, 3 digit
Set C—Rounding to the Nearest Ten, 4 digit
Set D—Rounding to the Nearest Hundred, 3 digit
Set E—Rounding to the Nearest Hundred, 4 digit
Set F—Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Hundred, mixed practice
Do I need to use them all?
Definitely not for every student! So many times, I would be working with a struggling student, and it would take him or her multiple tries to finally “get it.” By the time the light bulb came on, I was out of practice sheets! So I included lots of extras, not to overwhelm you, but so you have them for those students who need to try try try again.
Ideas for Use:
Use the practice pages whole class as practice, homework, classwork, or a simple assessment.
These are great practice activities for small group work because you can easily draw a rounding triangle on a whiteboard and walk struggling students through the process again and again.
These make great math intervention practice pages for students stuck with rounding and place value. They are also great for a parent volunteer to math buddies to work on with students.
Once students have mastered the rounding triangle, keep copies on hand for review later in the year. You can send them home for individual homework or use them as morning work now and then. You can also keep some copies on hand for emergency sub plans or for review before THE test.
