This cooperative game gives your 3rd and 4th grade students an opportunity to practice rounding whole numbers in an incredibly fun and engaging way! Students will need to round to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand in order to avoid waking a bear and make it to their campsite. In addition to all of the game components, a recording form has also been included.
I am an avid player of board games and in creating this game I had two main priorities. First, it was important to me that students would have an abundance of practice in rounding numbers. Second, I wanted to create a game that was engaging enough that even without the rounding practice, students would be motivated to play and re-play because the game was enjoyable in and of itself!
To play the game students spin a spinner which either directs them to choose a rounding card or place an obstacle. If the students spin "rounding" they will all independently solve the problem. They will then need to come to a team consensus around the answer. If they are correct, they will earn a hiking path tile and will be on their way to their campsite... but if they are incorrect more obstacles will be placed in their path.
Even when students earn hiking path tiles, they will need to use strategy to place them correctly so that they can make their escape. Again, as a board game player, it is important to me that the game be enjoyable and playable- I have worked hard to balance the game so that it is winnable... but not every single time! Your students will have to round carefully and place their pieces strategically in order to win!
This game is also included in the Rounding Whole Numbers Bundle if you are also in search a rounding lesson (one of my TOP selling resources) along with worksheets!
