Product Description

Your students will be talking (and singing) about this study for weeks! This constructivist activity using visual and media literacy is not your average reading or geography lesson! Your students will be digging through vintage postcards, song lyrics, articles, and photographs of Historic Route 66 to find the answers they need for their visual literacy scavenger hunt. The students will also compare and evaluate two versions of the song, Get Your Kicks on Route 66 and use the lyrics to build a map of the Mother Road -plotting both cities and states. This bundle of activities covers many Common Core objectives for grades 4-8th including U.S. Geography, innovation, mapping skills, reading comprehension, and media interpretation. Finally, the students will use highlighters to dissect a highly engaging nonfiction text and compile their findings into a simple, individualized graphic organizer.
