This product is intended as a reading guide for the story "Roxaboxen" by Barbara Cooney. Page 1 is making a prediction based on the title, discussing the setting (Yuma, AZ), and understanding vocabulary. Page 2 is a discussion about the services, rules, and consequences in communities. Students can compare and contrast their own community with the one in Roxaboxen. This also correlates well with the California History and Social Studies standards. Page 3 is for students to record similes they come across as they read (Language Arts standard). Page 4 is for students to practice the strategy of visualization and attention to detail by drawing a map of Roxaboxen. Page 5 and 6 is for students to use their imagination and create their own community with services, laws, and consequences. Then they get to draw it! All of the pages have different focuses and help give students a well-rounded understanding of the story. I hope you enjoy it!
