This packages contains everything you need to teach a comprehensive unit on the Royal Province of New France and the beginning of the Fur Trade – informational text, graphic organizers, writing activities, foldables, and more!

No textbook is needed to complete these activities – all of the information needed is included in the package! However, if you happen to use the “Crossroads: A Meeting of Nations” textbook with your class, this package compliments the “Arrival in Canada” chapter nicely.

While all of these resources can effectively be used as is, they make excellent additions to an Interactive Notebook. Interactive Reading Notebooks are powerful tools to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Interactive Notebooks allow students to express their ideas in unique ways, and process information presented in class. Completed Interactive Notebooks become valuable study tools for students to reflect back on, and are great as a record of student progress over time.

Samuel Champlain Notes and Graphic Organizer: Two pages of informational text on Champlain are included, as well as a corresponding graphic organizer.

The Royal Province of New France Notes and Graphic Organizer: Two pages of notes on the Royal Province of New France are included, as well as a corresponding graphic organizer.

Voyageur Notes and Diary Entry Writing Activity: Detailed informational text on the daily life of a Voyageur in New France is included. Students use this information to complete a diary entry writing activity, where they describe daily life from the perspective of a voyageur.

The Government of New France Notes and Foldable: Detailed informational text on the government of New France is included. Students use this information to complete a foldable activity about Jean Talon and Comte de Frontenac. Instructions and template included!

Filles De Roi Notes and Recruitment Poster: Students read over the included informational text on the Filles De Roi, and use what they have learned to create a recruitment poster to encourage young women to move to New France as Filles De Roi. Poster template included!

Seigneurial System Notes, Tables, and Graphic Organizer: Students read the included informational text about the seigneurial system, and complete two tables about the responsibilities of seigneurs and habitants. Students then complete a graphic organizer that asks them to draw and write to compare the different perspectives of seigneurs and habitants.

The Fall of New France Notes and Foldable: Students read the included informational text and create a foldable describing factors leading to the fall of New France. Instructions and template included!

New France: Travel Suitcase: Students imagine they are traveling back from New France, and illustrate items they plan to bring back with them. After, students must write about the historical significance of each item.

New France: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Students choose an important event from the reading, and then must illustrate and describe its historical significance.

Essay Topics: Several essay topics relating to the unit are included.
