Did you ever play with a Rubik's Cube? You are not alone! Over 350 million have been sold. It appears in over 15 movies too!
This lesson will teach you how to solve this puzzle. The 24 page packet comes with a link to a video so you can hear and see me walk you through the steps. An outline and explanation of how the brain is growing during the process and handouts for your students help engage them in a deeper understanding of the Rubik's Cube and several math terms. A certificate to award each successful student is included for your convenience. I have taught my 4th and 5th graders with this method. (And I give them bonus points if they can teach someone else who was not in our class.)
They will practice rotations, slides, turns, and will observe angles, perpendicular lines and parallel lines. Predictions and outcomes are also addressed. Fairness and how a game might be fair is questioned. The older students can solve for volume, area and surface area. Observational skills will help them problem solve and discovering short cuts and watching the cubelets move will tap into their creativity!
Included is a STUDENT handout (cheat sheet) for them to keep with them as they practice solving the cube.
As as bonus I have included a FREE resource where you can get a brain hat pattern so that your students can make a 3-D hat. Also included is a net of a Rubik cube so they can fold one and see the faces clearer.
Finally there are several unique facts, a short history of Erno Rubik, and a link to purchasing Speed Cubing if they get really skilled at solving the puzzle.
