Before Christmas, use Rudolph's classic Christmas movie to teach your students just how purposeful authors are when they plan CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, PLOT EVENTS, and SETTING. Your students will also come to understand how each of these elements works together to create a THEME. This activity includes a quick-write to activate background knowledge and make personal connections, a handout that will be completed as the students watch the film, and an If...Then WRITING ACTIVITY that has students generating alternative endings based on changes in the plot. The final task of the activity is to ask students to reflect on their earlier quick-write responses.
Due to copyright reasons, I cannot include the film; however, check your media center for a copy or use your own!
Visit Patten's Place for more holiday ideas using the following texts or films:
THE YEAR WITHOUT A SANTA CLAUS (by following one character through the film, students will see how authors reveal different themes through different characters in the same story)
A CHRISTMAS CAROL(one product walks your students through a basic literary analysis; another product is a foldable/pop-up final project for the text)
A CHARLIE BROWN'S THANKSGIVING (writing a characterization paragraph)
