A common core close reading unit that targets reading and writing standards around the social studies concepts of citizenship: rules, rights, laws, and responsibilities. I open my year with this unit because it addresses all three text types: informative, opinion, and narrative texts. It includes mentor texts and writing for all three of these text types while addressing social studies concepts.
The unit includes:
Articles: Rules, Laws, Rights and Responsibilities (and many differentiated versions of these) --Each article has pre-reading, comprehension, and writing connections
*Just added (August 2015) Little songs to introduce articles.
Also reference pages for students to highlight sight words and vocabulary for each article.
QR Codes for books that go with this unit (could be listening center)
Note taking pages
Discussion questions/scenarios based on the concepts that tie to writing
Narrative input chart story (Great for introducing vocabulary)
Two versions of a mini-book that go with narrative input chart story
Vocabulary Cards for wall
Student Vocabulary cards
Unit cover pages (for student folders)
Writing prompts (several written and one power point prompt)
Mentor texts for informative (3 main texts--but many additional differentiated versions), narrative (3 narrative texts), and opinion texts (6 opinion texts)
Editing pages where students work on CCSS standards
Graphic organizers--these are all differentiated
iMovie project script master and reflection
*Just added* 8 page mini-book (4 sheets double-sided) on who makes rules and laws

I plan to teach a week or two on rules, a week on laws, a week on rights and responsibilities. There is more than you need to do this and more. The unit is totally integrated blending reading informational text, literature, and writing.
*Summer 2015 Update* I completely redid and reorganized this unit to prepare for next school year. I added mentor texts in narrative to make this a complete unit that includes reading and writing opportunities in all 3 text types. If you already own this unit please re-download. I think you will like it!
I do this unit in conjunction with the narrative story Bud's Day Out. Below is a link to a unit I have for this book:
