STEP 1: If necessary/possible turn subtraction into addition.

REMEMBER:

Subtraction of a positive number is the same as adding the same negative value.

“MINUS POSITIVE” can mean “PLUS NEGATIVE”


Subtraction of a negative value is the same as adding the same positive value.

“MINUS NEGATIVE” can mean “PLUS POSITIVE”


STEP 2: Add the values in the expression using one of the three below rules based on the conditions in your addition problem.

a) Adding two positive numbers:
To add two positive numbers, add the values as normal.




b) Adding two negative numbers:
To add two negative values, add the absolute value of the numbers, and keep the negative sign.

c) Adding two opposite signed numbers:
To add two numbers with opposite signs, find the difference in the absolute values of the numbers, then keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
