The Rules for Syllables kit was designed after my own experiences of teaching syllables to my fourth grade students. This is the actual lesson plan set and activities I use to teach syllables as part of my classroom’s Working with Words 15 minute block. Syllables are an important component of both decoding and spelling, and I want the kids I teach to have these powerful tools in their arsenal of fix-it strategies for both reading and writing.
This activity kit is taught using the guided release system (scaffolding). The teacher thinks aloud in front of the class (to demonstrate thinking), the class thinks together (supported thinking in a group) and finally thinks alone (independent work). These varying degrees of guidance give students the support they need while they strengthen their abilities in an area of learning. The guidance is gradually reduced as the students become more comfortable with the skill.
The Rules for Syllables kit contains everything you need for teaching syllables to third through fifth grade students, including vocabulary cards and a class check list. The eleven lessons were designed to fit into a 15 - 30 minute word work session. Extra time can be taken if needed, and additional activities may be used in a second work session.
The eleven rules taught include how to hear and see syllables in words, divide words with short vowels, long vowels, solitary vowels, digraphs, prefixes, suffixes, multiple consonants, compound words, and words ending in –le.
