Rules of Friendship: Tool to Define Relations
Visuals for Autism, Aspergers, and Emotional Disorders
Individuals with autism, and other trusting, kind people, often have difficulties navigating the complex world of friendship. Some “friends” will attempt to take advantage of these kind individuals. To help with this problem, I created Rules of Friendship. This consists of 2 pages, one page stating actions that are okay for friends to do and another page that defines what actions are not okay for friends. On both pages, each action is named, next the action is described, and then the final box details what an appropriate response would be.
The Rules of Friendship charts are great for classroom discussion, group therapy/counseling, and one-on-one role playing. Rules of Friendship has been used for my students in school and at home. Simply print in black and white or color, or use as a digital copy on the computer or ipad. A plain version and a decorative border version are both options for you for printing. Some students learn best with no clip art distractions, while others may find the decorative border stimulating.
