This activity aims to have students explore the various topics they will encounter while reading the short story "Rules of the Game" by Amy Tan. The presentation provides a step-by-step explanation of the activity. After students are placed in small groups and are given their topic (mother-daughter relationships, Chinese/American culture, adulthood, childhood, immigration/naturalization, life), they should be given time to discuss what they know about that topic. Some topics rely solely on their own experience and knowledge, while others will be given specific websites to explore. After their initial discussion, they are to come up with a set of "rules" that govern that topic. (Get it--"Rules of the Game of....!") Once the rules are made on a poster, the students will complete a gallery walk during which they will respond to the other groups' sets of rules.
