This book consists of two words. "Run, run!" "Stop, stop!" On the first day of school I read one of the big versions of The Gingerbread Man. I bring a cake-pan-size cookie for the whole class to decorate. I set up ahead of time for someone to hide it without letting me know where it is during recess. (I suggest somewhere in the kitchen.) We look everywhere for that little bounder and get to know the school as we go. When we finally find him, we go back to class and figure how many pieces we will need so we can all eat him fair and square. After that, I ask the kids what the Gingerbread Man says. "Run, run, as fast as you can..." I write "Run, run!" on a chart paper, saying the sounds as I write. I have them run in place. I ask them what the characters say. "Stop, stop!" I repeat the process with that word. I give each child his/her own book. We practice sounding out the words, color the cover, draw a picture and write a story. Each child has a book to take home on the first day of school!
