Product Description
Have your students ever wondered what it would be like to run their own food business? It might sound simple to them, but it it's not. Choosing the restaurant location, picking the menu, and keeping tabs the checks are just a couple of the issues that business owners face. With the PBL activity, Run Your Restaurant, students will get to see what it's like they're running the kitchens.

Run Your Restaurant integrates elements of research, planning, math, and ELA skills as students design and plan an eatery of their choice. At the end of this PBL students will have a more complete understanding of the skills needed to run and manage a restaurant from picking the menu, designing the look, and understanding the importance of a budget and cost.

Students may need to have access to a variety of resources to complete this PBL. This could include maps, internet access, and laptops/computers/devices.

There are 20 activities (most are 1 page each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research.

As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

9 Planning It Out
Students answer questions about their favorite types of food, where they like to eat, and more. They also brainstorm all they know about running a restaurant.

11 A La Mode Vocabulary
Students write definitions or draw illustrations of vocabulary terms that relate to the restaurant industry.

14 Make it Official
Students decide on the name of a restaurant, the logo, and the style it will have.

15 Every Type Of Food
Students write six restaurants and analyze the different types of food that each serves.

16 Picking the Menu
Students decide what foods they would like to include. These don’t have to be final decisions and can be used as a time to brainstorm ideas.

17 Budget and Supplies
Students will have an unlimited budget to buy appliances, supplies, and materials they need. Then they will find totals, separate the information, and graph the results.

21 Cutting Checks
Students will take their final totals and cut checks to pays for the materials they have bought.

22 Menu
Students design a menu with the food they will serve. There are two versions to pick from (one is blank, one has places for drinks, appetizers, side dishes, and main courses. Choose the variation that works best for your class.

24 That’s a Lot of Food
Students must round food totals to the nearest 10s, 100s, 1,000s, and 10,000s place.

25 Estimating Cost
Students must estimate costs for their monthly bills and find totals for 2 months, 6, months, and 12 months. There are two pages: one rounding to the nearest hundred and another to the nearest tens place.

27 Tipping Point
Students must find the tip amount for three bills. The tip amounts are 10%, 15%, and 20%. This page requires double digit multiplication unless students can use a calculator.

28 Footing The Bill
Students take orders from classmates and find the total cost for each bill. Classmates will look on their menu to make the selections.

32 Job Positions
Students will fill job positions within the restaurant with students from their school or classroom.

33 Maps
Students will design a map of the KITCHEN and a map of the ENTIRE restaurant. The kitchen will include all the materials they purchased from their earlier budgeting. The maps will be created in overhead views and students will labels and color in the entire maps.


-All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.

-Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
