Running Out of Time Facebook Reading Comprehension Activity. As many of you know, Facebook is becoming a very popular way for kids and adults to communicate with one another. So, in an effort to help connect reading to the lives of students, Wiseguys has created a 4-page Facebook activity for the book Running out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This activity contains a blank "Facebook" template page, a template page with directions, a step-by-step instructional page, and a grading rubric.
For this activity, students are asked to complete several tasks. First, they are asked to write the name of the book at the top of the Facebook page. After that, they are asked to draw a colorful picture about a favorite character from the story. Then, students are asked to think of at least six "friends" that their character would like to "invite" on his/her Facebook page (two character friends from the story that they read, two story friends from another book, one famous friend such as an athlete, actor/actress, singer, and one of their own friends).
After that, students need to think of five events that their character would want to share with his/her six "friends". Students will need to write the event name in the Facebook page and include at least 1 complete sentence about the event. For example, "Heading to the lake... I am going fishing today with grandpa on Upper Long Lake. I'll let you know how I did later."
My students have found this activity very rewarding and enjoyable.
