Use a running record to informally assess students' reading levels.
Select a leveled text for a student to read aloud to you or allow a student to read what he/she is already reading to determine if it is a good fit book.
Each box represents a word. As the student is reading, put a check if the word is correct or write the word the student missed.
Accuracy: # of words read correctly / # of words in passage (in this case 100)
Reading Rate: words in passage (in this case 100) x 60, / total # of seconds
