This handout includes the poem "I Have Visited Again."
The handout will lead students through the following activities:
annotating the poem (circle difficult words and write synonyms, underline clear portions, highlight emotion provoking words, re-reading)
Writing about the poet's unique creation of verses, rhyme scheme, rhythm, and enjambment
Analysis questions: central idea, literary elements, author's attitude, text evidence, setting, shift, imagery, theme.
Extension question: consider the impact of setting and the Romantic period. Self-text connection.
Creating your own piece of prose of poetry while using the poem as a model.
This assignment is meant to be a hands on approach to teaching poetry for high school students. The poem is interesting to students and contains a lot of symbolism to analyze. The activities and skills were made with a common core tested focus.
