The premise of the project is very simple:
Rusty is a stuffed dog who goes home each night with a different child. Each night, the family writes a short story about what Rusty did during his visit in journal that accompanies him. Sometimes he goes to the grocery store, plays a video game, or maybe even has dinner with the family. The next day, the student shares the details of his visit and reads the story to the class (with the teacher's help when necessary).
This project makes writing and sharing stories a family project, and one that the entire class comes to love. It's also a great alternative to traditional show and tell models which (in my opinion) breed jealousy and inequality.
