Description

Are you working with a child who deletes either the first or second part of their cluster? Have you tried all of your tricks, but your student is still having difficulties saying their 's' clusters? The ‘S’ Clusters Help Sheets resource uses different multisensory cues that break down how to say ‘s’ clusters using metaphors, visual cues, and backward chaining. 

Download the help sheets if you:

  • have tried different types of cues, and nothing has helped “click”.
  • have used cycles or the minimal pairs approach to target ‘s’ clusters and found that your child STILL reduces part of the cluster.
  • your student has motor planning challenges (e.g., Childhood Apraxia of Speech) and requires specific cueing and support to sequence clusters.

There are three different sheets for each ‘s’ cluster:

  1. Backward chaining (e.g., key, key, key, ski)
  2. Forward chaining (e.g., ssssskey)
  3. Flashcards with visual cues

Multisensory Cueing:

We know that children learn differently, and these S’ Clusters Help Sheets give you multiple options for teaching ‘s’ clusters. Teach your child that they have to use their ”s” sound when they see the snake visual. You might like to tap or trace the snake’s “hiss” with your finger to reinforce the continual airflow and need to join the “s” sound to the next part of the word. This helps the child break down the word into smaller, manageable speech units to help the child to “hear” the individual sounds or syllables of the ‘s’ cluster word.

For children who have difficulties saying /sk/, /sp/, and /st/ clusters, you might want to probe whether it is easier for them to use the voiced consonant (e.g., ”sssgoop” for scoop) vs. the voiceless consonant (e.g., “ssscoop” for scoop). Using the voiced consonant can help children who have motor planning difficulties and can sound more natural in these clusters, especially if the plosive sounds “too aspirated”.

This resource gives you two options when treating /sk/, /sp/, and /st/ clusters.
