I am constantly looking for ways in which to sharpen my students' listening skills. With the Common Core curriculum and all of the standardized testing that is required of them, this is a particularly important skill to develop and hone, yet also much more challenging in a world in which we, as teachers, are competing with stimulation that is hitting our students from every direction.
John B. McLamore contacts Brian Reed, a producer at This American Life, because he wants him to investigate the police corruption in his town of Woodstock, Alabama (which he calls “Shit Town”). According to John, women who are stopped for traffic violations are sexually assaulted by police officers, and Dylan Nichols, a young man killed in a fight, was killed by those who brag that they will never pay for their crime. John claims that Kabram Burt, the alleged killer, bragged that it only took 30 seconds of kicking the boy in the head for him to become a paraplegic and only a few more days for him to die. As Reed investigates the story, it is clear that he might not find evidence that these events actually occurred. He may get much more than he bargained for. John B.
