What's a Learning Path?

This learning path is a series of videos, audio instructions, and practice activities designed to help students learn area and perimeter in a systematic way. It starts with the basics and adds in higher-level skills and rigor as students gain understanding. The Learning Path Packet keeps students on task and offers a place to show what they've learned. The Learning Path ends by students taking a summative quiz.

How does it work?

Students start with a printed Learning Path Packet and a Google Slides file. They will start at the beginning of the Google Slides and work their way through the entire file. The slides contain embedded videos that will teach students about area and perimeter, audio files to share insight or directions, and digital practice activities. The slides also guide students to visit their packets to show what they've learned. The packet keeps students on track and allows you to check in on them at any time throughout the learning process. Once it's complete, it can be taken as a grade or sent home for parents to see what they've been learning at school.

Once students have worked through the Learning Path and have shown that they have learned their area and perimeter skills, they can take a 20-question summative assessment. This assessment can be taken as a grade or it can help you create small groups for additional targeted practice or intervention.

Recognize area as additive. Find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Multiply side lengths to find areas of rectangles with whole-number side lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in mathematical reasoning.
Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.
