This is an example (approx. 500 words) of a summary of a scholarly (peer-reviewed) article. It summarizes an article about Lois Lowry's _The Giver_ but it could be used as an example for any students who are learning the templates and conventions of summary and joining the "scholarly conversation." Transitional expressions and templates from Graff and Birkenstein's _They Say I Say_ are shown in bold. The summary follows the conventions of MLA style. Good for AP students, advanced undergraduates, and beginning grad students.
