The word list I distribute to students to accompany my "SAT Vocabulary and Linguistics Project" and the correlating graphic organizer, also in my store. The description of the assignment itself is below:
This is a fairly large mini-unit exploring SAT (or other appropriately challenging) vocabulary words. I use it leading into state benchmark practice tests to expose students to a multitude of challenging vocabulary that is most likely to appear on standardized tests.
Students create "biopoems" using their word as the "person" they are writing a biography about, explore etymology/origin/connotation/pronunciation/etc., create word "personifications" (ex: a short story about 'Mr. Omnipotent'), and create "new" words altogether using Greek and Latin stems most likely to appear on their End of Course test.
This can be adapted to use any vocabulary you use in your classroom, and there are also links to other lists available online that students can choose from. Students are given the choice of vocabulary words they want to really dig into for the project, and I have found that this is a highly engaging project in my 9th grade classes.
This project also comes with a very useful preparatory/"rough draft" organizer that I require students to complete before final drafting the project, and a suggested word list with links to other appropriate lists.
