This 89-slide PowerPoint features 45 S.A.T. vocabulary words which makes a great bell ringer activity! Task cards (and more!) complete this secondary resource.
Show one slide for students to copy the word, definition and sentence. (Examples include: Ubiquitous, Pristine and Acquiesce). Show the second slide for students to see a picture representation of the word and another example sentence. (All pictures are Ox and Emu original drawings.)
Although entitled “Word of the Day,” teachers may choose to show one word per week- or five words at a time (for a unit study).
Set #1 is for the first quarter of school (one each day for 9 weeks).
When I started using these with my 14 year old son, his twin siblings wanted to join. The twins are 10 years younger- not even in first grade- but they LOVED playing with the flashcards we made. Now in middle school, they have a solid working knowledge of most of the 200+ words we used. They often refer to the pictures before anything else. (“Mom, remember the flashcard with the really fat cat? What was the word for that?” Answer: Corpulent)
I love vocabulary, but have found that teaching 20 vocabulary words per week is not nearly as effective as teaching one word per day. This is a perfect activity for a bell ringer. Students sit down, pull out the printed graphic organizer (in the form of a Frayer) and begin writing down the information displayed on the PPT.
This product includes the PowerPoint to show each day (perfect to display as the bell ringer!) and a graphic organizer/ task card/ Frayer for each S.A.T. featured word.
As a bonus, I have added an “Adopt a Word Graphic Organizer for Vocabulary.” Students fill in the word, definition, and example sentences of one very special word that they will “adopt” all year long (like a flour baby…). My students love this activity, take ownership of their word AND teach it to their friends! If using the Adopt-A-Word, I suggest to do this activity FIRST. Students love to see when "their" word is the Word of the Day!
