INDIVIDUAL RESOURCE DESCRIPTIONS:
Moon Phase Sorting Activity:
Get kids thinking and engaged with the content! This activity directs middle school students to cut out the names, definitions, and pictures of each moon phase and paste them on a 3-column chart under the appropriate heading of "Word", "Picture" and "Definition".
Relationship Between Tides and the Phases of the Moon Activity:
Take a deeper look at the relationship between the moon and tides over time! In this activity worksheet middle school students are provided the dates of extreme tides and full moons over a 5 months period, and fill this information into a series of small calendar boxes. From this information, they must predict the dates for the neap tides during these months. They must also make a small diagram of how the moon would appear on each calendar day. A quick analysis section is included at the end, but the bulk of the assignment is to complete the calendars with moon phases and tides to observe the relationship between the two.
Use a Tide Chart to Graph Tides Activity:
Through CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS and a STEP-BY-STEP process, students generate a graph to discover the patterns in tides and how they relate to the moon. Lesson Outline: First, students use a Daily Tide Chart to complete the worksheet “Using a Tide Chart”. This familiarizes them with reading and working with the tide chart. Second, students graph the tide chart data. At the end, students complete the “Tide Graph Analysis” half worksheet. This paper instructs them on how to make some simple additions to their graph (labeling neap and spring tides, moon phases, etc.) and asks some analysis questions.
Moon Phases & Tides Review Activity:
Fun! Students cut out pictures of the sun, Earth and moon. On their desk, they manipulate the positions of the 3 pictures in relation to each other according to 10 different cards that say things like "spring tide", "full moon", and "solar eclipse". Students love this activity!
