Includes 5 NO or LOW PREP activities, an online investigation and an engaging project for kinetic/potential energy and energy transformations - all designed to SUPPLEMENT and add FUN to an existing energy unit! Supports NGSS MS-PS3-1 MS-PS3-2 MS-PS3-5.
Graph How Speed & Mass Affect Kinetic Energy: This activity has middle school students calculate (simple math, middle school appropriate) and GRAPH how the MASS and SPEED of different vehicles affects their kinetic energy (in two separate graphs). All data is based on realistic information about various types of cars, so this adds engagement for kids.
Online Energy Activity: Explores the questions "How does SPEED affect energy?" and "How does MASS affect energy?" Students use a free and easy to access online program. They "play" with object size and velocity of objects in a catapult and then measure and record the resulting energy. It includes the manipulation of variables, the collection of data, and data analysis.
Energy Transformations Picture Cards Activity: Effective for true comprehension, this activity is designed to help middle school students recognize the energy transformations that occur in the world around us. Students are given 30 colored picture cards of things like hair dryers and solar powered cars and then complete a graphic organizer (1 page front + back) to record energy forms before and after.
3 Energy Review Games: 3 quick but fun energy review games, including "Taboo Review", Energy Chain, and an Energy "Cootie Catcher".
STEM Energy Transformation Upcycled Toy Design Project: Challenge students to create a toy based on ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS using upcycled or recycled materials. Clear, simple instructions lead to GREAT projects with students of diverse abilities! Students can use whatever they have at home to design their toy, so it doubles as an upcycling project, as well. Past projects made out of simple upcycled supplies include a musical instrument made out of a toilet paper roll and elastics, a propeller boat made out if a water bottle, elastics and plastic spoons, and a helicopter toy made entirely out of free paint mixing sticks. This is a fun one, for sure!
