INDIVIDUAL DESCRIPTIONS:
"Deadly Density" High Interest Reading & Questions:
This quick read (1-page) highlights the role of chlorine gas in World War 1, and how the property density made it possible to be used as a weapon. At the end of the quick reading, students answer 7 analysis questions, all related to density and the properties of chlorine.

Density Creative Writing Activity - Gold Rush & Panning for Gold: students are provided a quick reading about the gold rush and how the
density of gold has a role in how it is mined. Students are then shown an old-time Wanted poster advertising for gold prospectors and gives a "job description" (which explains the process of panning for gold). Students are assigned to pretend to be a gold prospector of the 1800's and write a letter home describing their experience. The fun part is they are provided with 26 slang words that prospectors actually used, and must incorporate them into their writing piece! (The slang is completely appropriate for middle school.) A sample sentence from a student's letter might read "So this gut was a jumper, so we decided to give him fits for taking our color!" While the students have fun with the slang, the instructions remind students that the point of the letter is to to demonstrate their knowledge of density.

Does Density Change with Object Size Lab (EASY SUPPLIES!): This lab activity uses readily available supplies, and you can easily substitute some if you need. We use wood craft sticks, lead fishing sinkers, glass marbles, and cubes of brass and steel that we got from the density cubes sets available from science supply catalogs. You will also need scales for mass and some graduated cylinders for volume. The lab worksheet guides students to measure mass and volume of the different materials. First they find mass and volume of 1 sample, then they add another, then another. For example, they measure the mass and volume of one marble, then two marbles, then 3 marbles. (So, you need 3 "copies" of each material - 3 marbles, 3 cubes, 3 wooden craft sticks, etc. Have students do the measurements in stations to cut down on what you have to provide.) They then calculate the density of each trial. The activity leads them to see that the density remains the same even when you add mass and volume to each material.

Density Poster Assignment - Cumulative Project: students are first introduced to the problem - an engaging scenario in which several recyclable materials have been mixed together. Using their knowledge of density, students are challenged to design a recycling factory that can separate the materials. First, they will create a rough draft of their factory plan that will be signed for approval by 3 "colleagues" (classmates or teacher). Then, they make a final draft poster showing their factory and how they use density to separate the materials. Additionally, there are also instructions for a letter writing component (to request the recycling job). This letter writing portion of the assignment is an optional extra. Supplies for this project are simple - paper and colored pencils and markers.
Additionally helpful (but NOT necessary to complete the project!) are a milk jug, soda can, soup can, green soda bottle, and magnet. A simple, student-friendly rubric is included.
