This could be used over an entire morning or several mornings. There are two articles for students to read. There is a comprehension section in SBAC format. Questions include multiple choice as well as free response. Students are required to compare and contrast the articles. There is also a "bonus" question that requires students to use Google to find information, then write an opinion based on that information.
There is also a practice performance task. Students use the information in the articles to construct a detailed, multi-paragraph response. I have included full credit as well as partial credit sample responses. I have also included possible writing activities that will encourage your students to think critically about the responses.
It is so important for students to become familiar with the SBAC format. The format can be overwhelming for students who have never seen it before. Even though students have the skills to solve these questions and perform well, they may panic and shut down if the questions are phrased in a way they have never seen before. I like to give my students lots of practice so they are comfortable answering multiple choice questions as well as defending their responses in free response form. I haven't been able to find the best SBAC prep resources, so I decided to make them myself. I hope you find them as useful as I have!
