Calling all mad scientists... We just launched the new Lucy Calkins LAB REPORTS unit of study in my classroom. If you're unfamiliar with the book, it turns your writer's workshop into a science laboratory! And BOY are we having fun with it... mu-ah-ha-ha!!! (Sheldon would be proud of us!) :)
Students learn how to write and think like scientists. Along with the experiments listed in the Lucy Calkins' Lab Reports book, I also wanted my 2nd graders to know and understand the different occupations out there in the world of science.
So I created this 12-page powerpoint slideshow to introduce the various fields of science careers to my kiddos. I'll be honest, they LOVED the show - and it got many of them fired up about a future career in the sciences.
After we watched the powerpoint, I then conducted a survey to find out which field my students might choose to work in... great discussions ensued!
Next, we created a large scale pictograph to share the results of the poll. What a fun, inter-disciplinary activity it turned out to be!
The following fields are discussed in the powerpoint:
- Computer Scientist
The slideshow concludes with a summary of all 10 occupations and poses the question: "What kind of scientist would YOU like to be?"
ALSO included in the kit:
- Science Career Concentration Game Cards
- Lab Report Planner & Record Sheet
- Lab Report Summary writing papers
- Additional writing paper for students to write a narrative about what type of scientist they might light to be
In one big bundle, you receive the teacher slideshow, concentration game, experiment planner and record sheet, narrative lab summary report paper and paper templates for another narrative writing piece describing their career interests. This kit is a perfect compliment to any unit examining the sciences.
