SCOOP! Contractions is a two - four player card game. It's a race to see who can read the most contractions before the other player gets the SCOOP!
This card game has 48 contraction cards and 6 SCOOP! cards. Players take turns choosing cards and reading the words. Watch out, though - if a player uncovers a SCOOP! card, s/he takes ALL of the other player's cards. Contractions include words with am, are, us, is/has, would, had, have, will/shall, and not.
This game is great for centers, small groups, and RtI. Students will have fun while strengthening reading skills! You could also use these cards for word walls or place on a ring for individual practice or assessment.
I created this version of the game because I needed to differentiate for my RtI groups and centers. My students had so much fun playing the Magic E version that I needed to create a similar version with different skills. My other SCOOP! sets include digraphs, diphthongs, r controlled vowels, two syllable words, three syllable words, Dolch words, Fry words, and CVC words. The contraction set came to be because my students were reading contractions as the words that made them up, rather than as the contraction.
As an alternative, you could have students read the contraction and then tell the two words that make it up. If they do so correctly they can keep the card; if read incorrectly or the words that make it up are misidentified, the card goes back in the draw pile.
Thank you for looking! :)
