Students practice subtracting numbers from 1-20 while playing a game that gets them up and moving. There are two ways to play.
SCOOT! and Subtract the Room Rules:
There are 26 cards in this game . Separate them by cutting around the outside.
How to Play Scoot!
Each student begins with one card at their seat. They answer the question in front of them and record the answer on their recording sheet. After a minute the teacher yells, “Scoot!” and all the students scoot over one seat to answer the next question. This continues until students return to their original seats. Then the class can mark their own pages as the teacher reads out the answers from the answer key.
How to Play Subtract the Room:
Hide the cards around the room before the students come in. Give each student a recording sheet and have them wander the room, finding the 26 Christmas cards and writing the answer on their sheet. Students enjoy playing this way as they get to do a “treasure hunt” to find the missing cards. The only negative side to playing this way is you will have some students finish before others, so make sure you have something for the fast finishers to do.
If you have students who you know will be really slow and struggle with this you can always give them a number line to use or tell them they only have to do 15 questions instead of all of them.
