Super fun Secret Words for the Short E Word Families!!
Grab these in the SECRET WORDS BIG BUNDLE of Short Vowels Word Families to save over 20%!!
I've been asked to make more of my best selling Secret CVC Words for literally years and I am so excited to say that I have finally posted these!!
These are just like my Secret CVC Words and Secret Sight Words centers but for each of the 4 short E word families. This set practices the following short E families:
-ed (9 words)
-eg (3 words)
-en (8 words)
-et (10 words)
so that's 30 Secret Word cards total!
There are less words in this set than the other short vowel word families sets since short E simply has less word families and words within them but it is still a super fun pack to practice those tricky short E words!
You can also get the other short vowel sets posted individually here:
These sets are mostly CVC words but there are also simple CCVC words to complete the word families. I hope you love these cards!
These are AWESOME for practicing beginning sounds as well as the short vowel word family you're working on!! They're great to pull out for review all year. Students look at the picture in each box to figure out its beginning sound and write the letter (or put the letter) underneath it. Once they've done all the pictures, they've revealed the Secret Word! It's one of my favorite literacy centers because it's so fun and provides a ton of practice!
I tried to vary the pictures a lot so there was a ton of beginning sounds practice. For example, the letter P isn't represented by a pig every single time. It's represented by pizza and penguin and popcorn and a pen and so on! So it's A LOT of practice. This makes them so great for students with limited vocabulary to expand it in such an engaging and visual way. These cards go along really well with my Alphabet Writing Centers Charts for Each Letter so it's awesome to print them and put them in clear sheet protectors in a binder that kids can look through to find words they don't know. I picked really simple kid friendly words so I believe they're really easy to figure out but if you think any of your students may struggle with knowing vocabulary, those are a great option to have as a support for them! :)
If you want to see what these cards look like in action, you can see real pictures of the Secret CVC centers in this blog post:
There are a lot of other fun short vowels games and resources in that post too if you'd like to see more fun stuff!
If you need more Short E practice, I highly recommend:
All of those resources also come in bundles if you want them for all the sounds :)
For these Secret Words cards, you play this center or small group activity just like my other Secret Words activities by cutting them out (be sure to cut the word off the left side - that's just for your reference) and setting as many out at a time as you think your students can handle. They are so fun!
You can laminate the cards and have students use dry erase markers to write the letter for each sign then write them on their recording sheet when they're all done. You can also use bottle caps (water bottle caps work great!) with letters written on them to put in the boxes, alphabet magnets, or any letter manipulative!
Several levels of recording sheets are included so you can decide what works best for your class and differentiate for the different learners in your class.
I have included a really easy to use table of contents that lists all of the words by sound and you simply click on the word you need and it will take you to that page. This will make it SO easy for planning each week - just click on the words you need that week, print, and go!
Your students will love figuring out the secret word! These are perfect for a literacy station to practice working with words and are especially great for fast finishers who need a challenge or want to see something different than the typical working with words activity.
These are NOT included in the Secret Words Bundle which is a huge bundle of a ton of centers like this if you want even more! :)
