The game, Self-Advocacy 101, supplies Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with a wide spectrum tool for teaching self-advocacy skills to their students (ages 5-21 years). The game can be played with an individual or a group up to four students. It encompasses four categories in a single game format: Educational Accommodations, Hearing and Amplification Basics, Social Emotional Development, and Communication Strategies. Each category contains 49 related question cards (including scenarios) to initiate student interaction, thought, and discussion while providing the teacher with suggested answers at his/her fingertips to transform each turn into a teaching moment. The teacher is free to select, adjust, and/or rephrase the content of each card to meet the academic and language level of the student(s). A teacher checklist is also included for each category to help track each student’s progress. The students are kept entertained by taking turns, collecting game tiles and performing the action associated with each tile. The student with the most tiles at the end wins.
Self-Advocacy 101 provides a fun activity, maintains student interest, and reinforces the development of DHH student independence.
