Do you want your students to be able to create descriptive settings in their writing? Do you need to guide your students through the process of analyzing settings in literature? Then these worksheets can help!

CONTENTS

DESCRIBING A SETTING: This worksheet contains a photograph and students are required to write a short paragraph describing what they see, hear, feel etc. The worksheet guides them through the process.

CREATING THE SETTING: Before writing a story, students should plan their setting in detail. This worksheet will help with that by guiding students through the process of planning vivid and thought-put settings.

ANALYZING SETTING IN FAMOUS FICTION: Setting is an important element in fiction. What better way to learn how to create descriptive and effective settings, than by looking at examples from famous authors? This worksheet provides 4 descriptive extracts from famous works, with questions for analysis.

CHOOSING THE SETTING: For this exercise, students are provided with 6 scene-briefs, and they have to decide where they would set these scenes if they were writing them in a story or film. Students also have to go one step further and explain their choices, prompting them to think deeply about setting.

THINKING ABOUT SETTING: This worksheet is the barebones of a mind map. Students have to make notes on this page, adding to the branches, and extending it. This worksheet can be used either for planning a setting for writing, or for analysis of a setting in a literary work.
