NEWS REVIEWS…set of five
In my classrooms, discussing events in world news on a daily basis was very important and one of our favorite ways to voice opinions and listen to the opinions of others.
NEWS REVIEWS are a great way to integrate math, science and other curriculum areas together and are also a great way to purposefully use time at the beginning of the day to spark interest and at the end of the day to wind down. This kind of activity can also be a great filler for different times throughout the day.
I have always kept a file of NEWS REVIEWS that could be used by substitute teachers or teachers having to fill in, in my classroom for some reason. They make great emergency activities!
Generally, I would read the news item or have a volunteer do so and then we would discuss or actively get into, the topics for discussion. Sometimes the topics may all be done, sometimes just a couple and truly, they may not be used at all, as they are simply suggestions each time as to what might come from the article.
If the item failed to spark interest at all (as we well know that all classes are different) we’d simply move on after the initial reading.
These news items also make great centers for certain groups, great sparks to creative writing or in some instances, ideas for small project work.
Here I have included 5 free NEWS REVIEW samples and a much larger set will be available for purchase soon.
