Product Description
Analyzing short stories is a great way to help teach students about elements of literature, making inferences, analyzing language, and as a springboard into writing. Plus, you can do all of this within a few days!

This is a short mini-unit which contains an original short story with multiple activities based on the reading - everything from deep thinking comprehension questions, making inferences, studying word choice and tone and plot structure analysis.

CONTENTS

READING PASSAGE: A Concrete Garden’ by Lara Ferrari - This is the original short story, and is presented over two-pages with attractive graphics and layout.

SUGGESTED 3-DAY LESSON PLANS - There are suggested lesson plans, which make use of some of the materials in this pack. However, of course you can use the worksheets in any way you wish!

GRAPHIC ORGANIZER - This worksheet contains out-of-the box thinking activities (from writing the narrator’s Tweets to picking an animal to represent one of the other characters); students have to think creatively when filling in this worksheet.

MAKING INFERENCES - Contained on this worksheet is a table with inferential statements about the story; students have to decide whether the statements are true or false, and then give evidence for their inferences.

ANALYZING PLOT STRUCTURE - This page contains a blank plot arc, with space for students to identify and fill in information about the exposition, rising action, suspense, climax etc.

CLOSE READING QUESTIONS - This page contains three levels of questions for students to answer. Level one contains mostly factual recall questions; level two becomes more challenging with more comprehension questions requiring analysis and summary; level three is the most challenging with deep-thinking questions.

GRAMMAR & LANGUAGE - This page contains different sections for figurative language, grammar and punctuation, and vocabulary and word choice.

WRITING PROMPTS - This page contains many narrative writing prompts which stem from this short story.
