This novel study unit of SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL by Louis Sachar, is complete with lesson plans, student discussion questions, multiple choice tests, and activities for each chapter. Certain chapters provide opportunities for integrating reading/language arts with drama, math or science. The unit is ideal for use in guided reading, literature circles, and homeschool settings for grades 3, 4, and 5 (though originally used by grade 4 academically gifted classes). It easily aligns with CCSS. ELA-LITERACY Standards.
The LESSONS emphasize: character/physical traits, author's craft, literal/figurative interpretation, figures of speech, fact/opinion, generalizations, gestures, multiple meaning words, punctuation (comma, dash, colon, hyphen, apostrophe, etc.); and grammar and spelling rules for suffixes, contractions, and plurals. The lesson plans suggest games, mini-lessons, and memory hints to assist students.
The student booklet section contains DISCUSSION QUESTIONS often requiring the use of metacognitive strategies (connecting, visualizing, summarizing, questioning, predicting, etc.), and the logical development of rules for patterns in spelling and grammar.
The ACTIVITIES provide practice in organizational strategies and brainstorming, and may be on-going group projects for bulletin board displays or individual portfolio projects to be submitted upon the completion of the book.
The TESTS assess mastery of specific targeted skills, guide extended instruction, and provide practice in the application of test-taking strategies.
